What it usually means

Impatience, sometimes a test. Giving a number blind is how you end up bound to something you cannot deliver.

What to say

I want to give you a real one rather than a guess I have to change later. Two questions: roof and kitchen, roughly what shape are they in?

What not to say

Do not invent a number to satisfy the pressure. A number you retract is worse than a pause.
